TITV jobs to be open to all

Jobs for staff at a future TITV must be open to outsiders, not available only for existing employees, a National Legislative Assembly member working on the revamp of the news station said yesterday.

Somkiat Tangkijwanich said it was necessary to clarify the situation because earlier remarks by Premier Sura-yud Chulanont suggested current employees would be given preferential treatment.

Somkiat, the spokesman of an NLA sub-panel working on the matter, said the panel was scrutinisng two crucial conditions in a new bill governing broadcast media in Thailand: the proportion of TITV's income subsidised by excise duties on alcohol and cigarettes, and the salary of its management.

The panel has vetted seven articles out of a total of 50 in the bill, which is expected to gain NLA approval within the next two months. After the bill is passed, the channel's board must be selected within 120 days, then its director in the next 120 days.
