Graduate students sue their university over an elective subject

Four graduate students today lodged a complaint with the Phitsanulok Administrative Court against the Naresuan University's Faculty of Social Sciences for not opening an elective subject they wanted to study.

The students also demanded Bt397,520 compensation on grounds that registration problem forced them to spend one more semester before they could complete the course, which incurred more tuition fees and other relevant cost.

The plaintiffs were Wichai Paduka, Ariya Arjlasut, Panadda Lumcharoen, and Nichanan Jansuebthaew.

Wichai said the elective subject they wanted to study was Regional Economic and Social Development and they approached Assoc Prof Pacharin Sirasunthorn to teach this subject.

"Although the lecturer agrees, the faculty doesn't allow her to do so and thus we miss the chance to enrol for this subject," Wichai said.

He said the faculty offered another elective subject, which his group was similar to what they had already learned.

The faculty has explained that all lecturers each were allowed to teach only two subjects for master-degree course per semester, and Pacharin already reached the limit.
