Ten injured in billboard collapse

Ten people were injured, two seriously, yesterday afternoon when a billboard at the mouth of Soi Sukhumvit 70/4 collapsed during a rainstorm. Uprooted trees and power poles were also reported in other areas.

Bang Na district chief Krit Watcharasiritham said the 4 x 24 metre billboard fell onto a motorcycle taxi stand and passersby, causing 10 injuries. Two of the victims were seriously wounded. All of the injured were rushed to Bang Na Hospital.

Bangkok governor Apirak Kosayodhin, who later inspected the accident scene, said the collapsed billboard was not among the 28 billboards earmarked for demolition by city authorities.

"This shows that every advertising billboard is at risk of toppling during storm, whether it is firmly installed or not," he said.

The district office would contact the injured to provide them with assistance.

He also said that the city would speed up the demolition of the 28 billboards deemed unstable, and the process should be completed by this month's end.
