Airline opens Sukhothai hotel

Bangkok Airways will open a boutique hotel in Sukhothai this September, aimed at attracting both local and international visitors to the ancient Thai capital.

Construction of the 68-room hotel has followed the airline's development of the nearby Sukhothai Airport.

A source at the airline said the hotel, which is currently being prepared for opening, is regarded locally as Bangkok Airways' second property development in the area. It will offer traditional Thai ways of living and feature a miniature rice farm and farming demonstrations.

Meanwhile, the airline is also planning to begin services on more local and international routes from October.

The source said Thai Airways International would be operating six flights a week between Bangkok and Krabi during the cool season, flying Airbus A320s and beginning on October 29. The same day, Bangkok Airways will begin thrice-weekly flights linking Koh Samui and Krabi, using ATR aircraft.

Bangkok Airways also plans to begin flying from Chiang Mai to Siem Reap in Cambodia twice a week, using ATR aircraft.

A Civil Aviation Department source said Bangkok Airways was currently negotiating with the United Arab Emirates government to begin flights between Abu Dhabi and Phuket, linking one of Thailand's hottest tourist destinations with a growing source of visitors.

However, the airline source declined to provide more details, saying only that flights between Bangkok and the UAE were part of Bangkok Airways' long-term expansion plans.

Earlier, Bangkok Airways said it was also considering long-haul flights from Bangkok to destinations like Germany and the UK.
