Thai embassies to explain about the Sunday clash

Foreign Ministry spokesman Tharit Jarungwat said Tuesday the ministry had asked Thai embassies to explain the clash between anticoup protesters and the Thai police.

He said the ministry has followed the reaction abroad to the violence on Sunday night when antijunta protesters clashed with police as they tried to attack Privy Council president Gen Prem Tinsulanonda's residence in the Sisao Thewet district.

The ministry spokesman admitted that the incident might negatively affect the country's image. "The police tried to use peaceful methods to control the situation, but many foreigners consider that even if a country is being run by the military,

demonstrators still should have the freedom to hold rallies," he said.
