Somchai, a brother-in-law of former prime minister and party leader Thaksin Shinawatra, is being tipped as the group's new leader.
Sompong's comments were the first indication Somchai was in line for an executive spot in spite of earlier news reports he was a frontrunner for the leadership.
Sompong said the group was considering 75 former Thai Rak Thai members of Parliament whose voting rights were not revoked after the party dissolution. The group is expected to appoint nine to 11 executives this week.
He said the group decided to postpone its anti-constitution draft activities that had been slated for Thursday.
That is Thaksin's birthday and the group did not want people to associate the former prime minister with political activism.
Former Thai Rak Thai MP Kuthep Saikrachang said protesters had resorted to violence and national stability had been affected. It showed the coup could not lead to reconciliation, Kuthep said.
