Osmep initiative to assist SMEs amid strong baht

The Office of Small and Medium Enterprise Promotion (Osmep) is introducing measures to assist small and medium-sized enterprises, in a bid to cope with the baht's appreciation.

Director Jhitraporn Techacharn yesterday said the proposed measures included promoting risk management in the short term and supporting SMEs' expansion into new markets in the medium and long term.

With the baht strengthening 3.5 per cent against the US dollar in the past two months, SMEs have been the most affected among all Thai enterprises.

Osmep will assist SMEs by joining with financial institutions to offer packages that include loan-payment rescheduling, refinancing and assistance in diversifying risks from the United States and seeking new non-US markets.

Osmep has introduced an internationalisation programme to support SMEs through activities like international fairs, business matching and advice on investing abroad.

In addition, the office is also offering a consultancy programme that supports SMEs in improving their operations, machinery and other equipment and human resources.

Participating SMEs will be provided financial support in the form of 50 per cent of expenditures for a maximum of Bt250,000.

Last year Nok Air raised Bt1.7 million from the project, a donation that enabled life-saving surgery and treatment for 74 young patients.

Executive vice president Sehapan Chumsai said the airline was producing Nok Gives Life key rings, which are on sale for Bt40 until September 10.

Heaven for working mums

A budget of Bt10 million has been set aside to finance niche marketing strategies.

The company expects the premium take-home ice-cream market to be worth Bt700 million this year.
