Democrats Isaan-bound

The Democrat Party yesterday said it was pleased with the public reaction to its "People first" election slogan and will kick off its pre-election campaign in the Northeast early next month.

Deputy spokeswoman Nirattakarn Srilarp said the Democrats would begin on August 3 in Khon Kaen, where the party executive board and secretary-general will hold a meeting with members of the 35 party branches.

On August 7, Democrat rallies will be held in Ubon Ratchathani, Yasothon and Roi Et, she said.

Democrat spokesman Ong-art Klampaiboon said the TV and radio spots with the "People first" slogan, which began airing on Thursday, had been warmly received by the public.

He said the party also planned to set up billboards around the country to explain its slogan and highlight its campaign platform, which includes promises to provide free education, create more employment and increase welfare for the people, as well as to improve the economy.

Ong-art said people had welcomed the Democrats' election platform after seeing party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva's determination to solve the country's problems.

He said the platform had been compiled with input from the people and various organisations.

"Now, our political activities are not aimed to compete with anyone; we are competing against ourselves to win public acceptance," he said.
