Transgenders abused, ignored or viewed as sex toys, study reveals

The transgender group is discriminated and dehumanised in Thai society because of heterosexual thinking, according to new research by Srinakharinwirot University's Graduate School.

Society is dominated by heterosexual thinking which has divided human beings into only man and woman and this belief ignores people who have different sexual preferences, said Dr Kittikorn Sankatiprapha, who conducted a study called "Sexual harassment against katoey [transvestites]: significant under heterosexual discourse".

"Thai society treats katoey the worst among other homosexual groups and most social institutions neglected this group," Kittikorn said.

When hearing about sexual harassment of katoey, most people do not take it seriously but often make fun of them. They are exploited and humiliated in many ways, with some people viewing them as sex toys, the researcher added.

Instead of dominating people with heterosexual thinking, social institutions, including legal and educational bodies, should encourage society to learn and respect other ways of thinking about sexual preferences, Kittikorn said.
