Our celluloid hero is no gold-digger

Esquire magazine's Thai edition might have some readers thinking that Kriengsak Silakong has changed his name.

Published on July 23, 2007

The new edition has an interview with the man who organises all the movies for both of Bangkok's film festivals, including the current Bangkok International, hosted by the Tourism Authority of Thailand.

But his name is rendered (in Thai) as "Silathong", suggesting that Kriengsak had, perhaps superstitiously, gone for the "gold" (thong).

We called him up on our 50-year-old Nokia 001, hoping he'd struck it rich, but discovered it was just a "typo" (throughout the story).

This little misunderstanding could have been avoided if the magazine had simply called him by his "international" nickname, Victor.

But then that might have come out as "Victory".
