Saraburi's floral feast for Lent

The coming Buddhist Lent celebration in Sara Buri

Published on July 21, 2007

Khao Phansa - the Buddhist Lent - will be celebrated in unique fashion at Wat Phra Buddhabhat in Saraburi. While many temples opt for elaborate candle-carving festivals, it's choosing the subtler way, with a flower-offering ceremony.

Tak Bard Dokmai, as it's called, takes place from July 28 to 30. Next Saturday evening, long processions from the neighbouring communities will end in the temple grounds, where folk music and dances are planned.

On Sunday and Monday thousands of local devotees and visitors will present their floral arrays to the monks in two sessions, at 10am and 3pm.

Saraburi is a two-hour drive northeast of Bangkok. For more information, call the Tourism Authority of Thailand's Lop Buri office at (036) 422 768-9.
