Hamilton fastest in first practice for European GP

Nuerburg, Germany - Lewis Hamilton in a McLaren-Mercedes registered the quickest time in the opening free practice session Friday ahead of Sunday's European Formula One Grand Prix.



The championship leader clocked a time of 1 minute 32.515 seconds for the 5.148-kilometre Nuerburgring circuit, beating Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen by 0.236 seconds.

 Defending champion Fernando Alonso in the second McLaren was third fastest, followed by the BMW-Sauber of Nick Heidfeld and his Polish team-mate Robert Kubica.

 Felipe Massa in the second Ferrari was sixth fastest.

 McLaren lead Ferrari in the constructors' standings by 128 to 104 points after nine of 17 races.

 In the drivers' championship, Hamilton and Fernando Alonso reign supreme with 70 and 58 points, respectively. Raikkonen has 52, one point ahead of Massa.
