Davenport to bury retirement with August doubles date

Davenport to play doubles in her return to the circuit.

New mother Lindsay Davenport will dip her toes back into tennis just nine months after retirement by playing doubles next month the week before the US Open.

Officials at the Pilot Pen event have confirmed that the 31-year- old former number one with 51 career titles including three Grand Slams has asked to enter the August 17-25 tournament.

She is expected to team with former partner Lisa Raymond.

"After the birth of my son Jagger on June 10, I am very excited to announce that I will return to professional tennis at the Pilot Pen in August," Davenport said in a statement.

"This will be my eighth visit to New Haven and I have obviously loved playing the Pilot Pen for years."

"To think that just five and a half weeks after giving birth to a healthy baby son Lindsay has decided to return to competitive tennis is nothing short of a miracle," said director Anne Worcester.

Davenport, who last competed in Beijing in September, ranks 68th on the computer.
