Thais progress in badminton

Kunchala Voravichitchaikul and Songphon Anukrittayawan disposed of their Taiwanese rivals to reach the mixed double second round at the Philippines Open Badminton Championships in Manila yesterday.



The Thai pair, who came back from the brink of defeat to beat Chou Chia-Chi and Chen Hong-ling 17-21 21-10 21-14, next face Aparna Balan and Diju V of India.

In the men's singles, the country's No 2 Poompat Sapkulchananart edged out Scott Evan of Ireland 27-25 20-22 21-18.

Younger compatriot Pakkawat Wilailak went down to Indonesian Andre Kurniawan Tedjono 21-18 8-21 21-11.

In the women's singles, Thailand's No 1 Salakjit Ponsana went down 21-18 21-18 to her Japanese arch-rival Kaori Mori. Soratja Chansrisukot was beaten by another World No 12 Eriko Hirose, 21-11 21-17, while Monthila Meemek lost to Japanese Yu Hirayama 21-17 21-8.
