Govt urged to delay consideration on controversial security act

Internal Security Operation Command's secretary general Gen Montri Sangkasap said there is no urgency for the government to push the controversial internal security act into consideration of the National Legislative Assembly.

Some parts of the Act should be reviewed and resubmitted to the NLA for consideration. The process will take time and it could not be finished within this government's term.

Montri was the first senior military officer who said the Act needed to be reviewed and the next government should handle the matter.

The Act is now under scrutinisation of the Council of State after the cabinet endorsement last month.

The critics said the controversy Act empowers excessive power to the army chief. Under the Act, the army chief would have power to control movement of the people, announce curfews, detain suspects without charge and censor media for security purpose.
