China to import 1.1-million-tonne tapioca from Thailand

China will import tapioca products from Thailand 1.1 million tonne worth Bt5 billion as part of successful trade mission visited Shandong last week.



Commerce Minister Krirkkrai Jirapaet said yesterday that the mission visited Weifang city of Shandong province to tie up trade relation between the two countries.

Thai Tapioca Products Association inked an agreement with Weifang Ensing Industry to purchase Thai tapioca products. The Chinese company is the world's biggest citric acid manufacturer and its production uses for producing alcohol of 200,000 tonne per year.

The import of Thai tapioca aimed not only for producing alcohol but also to reduce maize and citric acid import.

In addition, Shandong Jingzki Wine Industry Group Corp also singed the agreement with Thai Tapioca Trade Association to supply 100,000 tonnes of tapioca products to the group. The group will use tapioca products as raw material for producing local white spirit.

Krirkkrai added that other Thai potential products to export include shrimp, fruits, and precious stones. Thai exporter will help China to set up gemological school to help manufacturing in China from quality selection, market, product design and export market. -The Nation
