It drew few foreign importers and created little business even for its 100 exporter tenants.
It will be replaced by a modern marketing plan clustering jewellery, ornaments, clothing and auto parts in suitable areas of Bangkok.
"The eight-floor building failed in its original concept as a display centre for Thai exports, so the department is considering other plans to turn it to good use," deputy-director-general Somjin Plengkhum said last week.
The department is looking at Mahesak, Silom and Surawong roads for jewellery, Khao San Road for silver, Bobae, Sampeng and Pratunam for clothing, Vorachak Road for auto parts and Chatuchak for domestic ornaments.
The first cluster will be competed next month. Shops in each area will be on the department's list of potential partners for overseas importers.
Each area will have its roving consultant unit.
They are aimed primarily at smaller firms.
