Thai star Boonsak Pole-axed

[BADMINTON] Thailand's Boonsak Ponsana ended his brilliant run in the quarter-finals after falling to Pole Przemyslaw Wacha 21-15 18-21 21-16 in the men's singles at the China Masters Super Series in Chengdu yesterday.

It turned out to be a disappointing day for the Thai ace, who just rose to No 8 in the world standings on Thursday. The unheralded Przemyslaw proved that he was not the old boy of the past, whom Boonsak beat in the Seville-hosted World Championships six years ago.

World No 17 Przemyslaw also showed that the world ranking did not matter in the game as the Pole was leading in the entire match to set up a semi-final clash against Wong Choong-hann of Malaysia.

In the mixed doubles, fellow Thais Sudket Prapakamol and Saralee Thungthongkam joined Boonsak in the flight home after losing to Indonesian Lilyana Natsir and Nova Widianto 21-17 21-16.

The convincing victory helped the Indonesian pair, who won the world title in 2005, improved their head-to-head to 6 and 0.

The Indonesian duo next take on England's Donna Kellogg and Anthony Clark, who stunned host's Zhang Yawen and Xie Zhongbo in the other quarter-final.
