Polluting ironworks attracts govenor's attention

Lop Buri Governor Suwat Tantipipat will tomorrow look into local people's complaints that an ironworks is emitting dust and smog during a trial operation.

"I have summoned the provincial industrial-works chief," Suwat said.

He said he would check what problems in this case were, and whether relevant authorities had already done their best.

However, Suwat said he did not believe in a suggestion that some officials might have been bribed to allow the ironworks to resume its operations even though it had yet to fully implement the necessary improvements.

The ironworks owned by Namheng Steel Company Limited is located in Tambon Deelang in Lop Buri's Phattana Nikhom district.

Local people have long complained that this ironworks polluted the environment, subjecting them to health risk. One of them, Sanom Potirat, was diagnosed with emphysema despite the fact that he did not smoke. He blames iron dust emissions from the plant.
