In his interview with Channel 3 mid-day, he said the number of workers as well as the number of employers under the social security system has been on the rise since 2005. The contributions to the fund has also been rising from Bt7.5 billion in May last year to Bt8.2 billion in May this year.

"As the contributions have been rising, this reflects the positive economic health."

Surin said that in the 3-year period from 2005, as of May the number of workers has increased from 8.2 million in 2005 to 8.6 million in 2006 and 9 million in 2007. The number of companies was 350,000 in 2005, 360,000 in 2006 and 380,000 in 2007.

"Certainly, there are closure of factories. But the number of new factories is rising in a larger scale than the number of shutdown factories.

"The baht has been strong for half a year but the number of fctories have been rising. This shows that we are still resilient to the baht impact," he noted.
