Pregnant convicts let off

The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) unamiously approved legal amendments yesterday that will spare pregnant women from the death sentence.

Current laws postpone execution until one year after women convicts on "death row" give birth. The amendments will however give life imprisonment to pregnant convicts who would otherwise receive capital punishment.

When the amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code take effect, new mothers will also be allowed to raise their babies for three years behind bars.

Friends of Women Found-ation director Thanavadee Thajeen supported the amendments.

However, she said, authorities should do more to allow children to grow under the care of their mothers.

She also expressed hope that the government would provide a facility to help raise children born while their mothers serve jail terms.

"The children should grow up outside jails," she said.
