Pregnant women spared from death sentence

National Legislative Assembly (NLA) approved on Wednesday legal amendments that will spare pregnant women from death sentence.

Current laws postpone the execution until one year after the female convicts on death row give birth to their babies.

However, the approved legal amendments will give life imprisonment to pregnant convicts who would otherwise be given capital punishment.

When the amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code take effect, the new mothers will also be allowed to raise their babies for three years behind bars.

NLA unanimously passed the bill to amend the Criminal Procedure Code.
