Nike/Adidas OEM plant shut down without notice

Thai Silp Southeast Asia Export Import Co Ltd, a local manufacturer of sportswears, shuts itself down without notice Wednesday, leaving 6,000 workers unemployed.

The workers have gathered in front of the factory in Samut Prakan.

Bunlue Yodbun, production manager of the company, said he was unaware of the decision to shut down the plant.

"The company has never signalled that it would lay off all workers. We're in the dark, but we're going to fight," he said.

Thai Silp's major clients are Nike Apparel Ltd and Adidas America & International Ltd.

Apai Chandanachulaka, Labour Minister, said that the company did not inform the authorities of the shutdown in advance. He said that based on the employment period, those workers are entitled to the combined compensation of Bt150 million.

He noted that the company shuts itself down because of huge debts as well as cancellation of contracts from overseas clients.

"We have ordered officers to survey companies which tend to cut jobs due to the strong baht, so that we can come up with remedial measures," he said.
