TNSC: baht should be Bt36 per US dollar

Thai National Shippers' Council (TNSC) yesterday urged the government to stabilise baht not below Bt36 against the US dollar to help all industries survive.

Chairman Suchart Chantaranakaracha said the government should be serious to resolve the rise of baht, which has been risen consecutively since January last year. The strengthening baht has affected to exporters substantially.

"If the rise of baht continues, the economy growth might be no longer driven by the export sector," said he.

He said that the relevant state agencies like Finance Ministry and Bank of Thailand have several tools to manage baht stable. Yet, these organisations have not proceeded any measures seriously.

Initially, Suchart gave a point of view that the relevant agencies to baht management would has to announce a clear policy first in that the export sector is important to the country's economy. The resolution derived from the stronger baht impact, therefore, is the priority to be done.- The Nation
