Illegal immigrants arrested

Twenty-nine Cambodian illegal immigrants and two Thai men who smuggled them into the country were arrested yesterday by Army rangers in Sa Kaew province.

Later, in a separate operation, Sa Kaew police arrested another 81 Cambodian illegal immigrants after sweeps at Rong Klua Market in Aranyaprathet district.

In the first arrests, rangers spotted three pickup vehicles travelling from a border crossing at Tambon Pa Rai. They pursued the vehicles. The first was driven by Thai national Khanueng Harnkhunthod and carried six Cambodians. A second was later intercepted after a high-speed chase. Aboard were 14 Cambodians driven by Thai national Narongrit Bamrungrajphakdee. The third truck collided with a tree after suffering a burst tyre. Nine Cambodians were arrested but the driver escaped.

The two drivers admitted they were paid Bt1,400 each to drive the Cambodians to Chon Buri. The immigrants said they paid a Thai agent Bt3,000 to enter the country for work.

Later in the day, the police netted 81 Cambodians working illegally at the popular tourist market. All 110 Cambodians have been detained and will be deported.
