Frankly, Sinatra, some Brits do care about honesty

The conventional British news media may have fumbled the ball badly in their coverage of Thaksin Shinawatra's take-over of Manchester City, but at least the online Guardian has a guy with a blog about football who knows a foul when he sees one.

David Conn must have shamed at least a few professional reporters by doing a better job on the story. While almost everyone else was portraying this Frank Sinatra fellow as the victim of bullying by dictators in a far-away holiday banana republic, Conn pointed out some inconvenient truths in the tale.

The blogger railed against England's Premiership League authorities forfeiting integrity in exchange for money, and right from the start his words drew hundreds of comments, pro and con.

Last Wednesday's post, "Thaksin closes in on City as trouble mounts at home", drew reams of praise. "David, you rock!" one admirer commented.

Another worded his congratulations thus: "It's so refreshing to see a sports columnist asking moral questions that even most political editorial writers are paying lukewarm attention to. I'm sure you understand Thais, who are opposed to Thaksin's reign. If you feel uncomfortable with men like him running a soccer club, you surely must appreciate how a lot of Thais feel having Thaksin at the country's helm. Thank you again."
