Energy Ministry to discuss lower sulphur level in bunker oil

The Energy Ministry and refinery operators will discuss this week on the measures to lower sulphur level in bunker oil to 0.7 per cent, amid concerns from refineries on the practicality.

Energy Minister Piyasvasti Amranand said that the measures to lower the sulphur level from 2 per cent must be finalised soon.

"If the government is to proceed with this, it should coincide with refineries' moves to improve their oil quality to meet the Euro IV standard. This would prevent the business operators from redundant investment," Piyasvasti said.

The control was proposed by the Environment and Natural Resources Ministry to reduce pollution problems in Bangkok, peripheral provinces, Chachoengsao and Chon Buri.

Piyasvasti also said that right now bunker oil consumption has been declining as industrial plants and power plants have resorted to more natural gas, which helps reduce pollution to some extent. Meanwhile, in tackling pollution effectively, the Environment and Natural Resources Ministry must also strengthen the measures to manage industrial wastes. - The Nation
