Burma releases four opposition politicians

RANGOON -- Burma has released four opposition politicians after they were "educated" following their arrests in May for creating unrest, state media reports said Friday.

National League for Democracy (NLD) members Win Myint, San Naing and Myint Kyaw Oo and former NLD member Phyo Wai Lin were arrested in two separate incidents in May for staging "prayer protests" calling for the release of the party's leader, Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi. Alll four were released from prison Thursday, said The New Light of Myanmar, a government mouthpiece.

The NLD won Myanmar's 1990 general election by a landslide, but the party has been denied power by the country's military leaders for the past 17 years, and many opposition politicians have been imprisoned on charges of creating unrest.

Suu Kyi has been under house arrest since May 2003.//(Deutsche Presse- Agentur/DPA)
