Angered by 'temple' design

Sumet Jumsai na Ayuthaya, the well-known architect and historian, yesterday submitted a letter to Culture Minister Khunying Kaisri Sri-aroon, demanding that she take action to stop the construction of a hotel in Chon Buri.

In the letter, Sumet said the design of the hotel was against Thai tradition and he called on the minister to take action against the owner.

"I have been in the forefront, for some years now, in trying to stop people using temple architecture for commercial establishments including hotels. Soon we will see the Royal Chapel as a sauna or massage parlour if we do not stop this trend," the letter said.

A photograph in The Nation yesterday showed the hotel designed in the style of a temple. The owner claimed the design was intended to attract customers.
