Princess and her sister

Her Royal Highness Princess Somsavali, who celebrates her birthday on July 13, talks about her close relationship with her younger sister, ML Sarali Kitiyakara or "Namphueng" this Saturday on TiTV's popular programme, "The Diary".

The princess says she has been like a second mother to Namphueng, due to a nine-year difference in age.

"I was born in England while Namphueng was born in Thailand. But we both grew up at Theves Palace. My parents were great; they taught us to love each other, never desert each other or quarrel. We always had to help each other. I had to take care of her, change her nappy, bathe her, feed her.

"I also had to check whether she had eaten or done her homework, and also tell her when it was time for bed. But I'm a good older sister; I scolded her only if there was reason to. I gave her things and played with her.

"Even when she had children of her own I carried on caring for her, telling her how to take look after herself, especially during her pregnancy. I was with her in the delivery room and after the birth, I gave her advice on child rearing, on food and nutrition. I do everything that's best for her, physically, mentally and spiritually… I'm always there for her."

The princess also says that their parents brought them up like any normal family. Home life was strict. The children had to make their own beds, clean the house and even sweep the floor.

"We had to learn to do everything. We were also brought up to be proper ladies, learning handiwork, cooking, flower arrangements, garland making, sewing and embroidery. I liked knitting the best. I even knitted sweaters for Namphueng's twins, Nong Pok and Nong Pong. She said they were one of the best presents she ever received."

The princess reveals that she and Namphueng enjoy singing, playing music and dancing and says Namphueng is a very talented singer.

"Even today I still keep an eye on her from a distance. She works very hard, and I have to keep reminding her that she has kids at home, to take it easy and spend some time with her children.

"I'm so proud of my younger sister, of her work and her singing skills."

"The Diary" airs at 2pm.
