GSB loans to civil servants

The Government Savings Bank has set aside Bt10 billion to lend to 30,000 indebted civil servants, starting with those working for the Revenue Department.

Those who can put up collateral are entitled to a maximum Bt2 million, while those without collateral are entitled to a maximum Bt700,000. The interest rate will be 7 per cent per annum.

Goanpot Asvinvichit, directorgeneral of the GSB, said yesterday that the civil servants have a maximum of 30 years to repay the debts.

"It's our policy to help civil servants refinance their existing debts at a reasonable interest rate. Civil servants at the Revenue Department will be the first under this new service," Goanpot said.

About 1,000 civil servants have shown interest in the new loans. GSB is approaching civil servants at other state units.
