A Bangkok University research institute Bangkok Poll found 57.7 per cent of respondents confident the Constitution Tribunal ruling would not spark unrest, while 42.3 per cent were not.
About 46 per cent of respondents said they were concerned the country's situation would deteriorate after the ruling next Wednesday, but 53.7 per cent were not.
Both the government and the junta can control the situation, according to 50.5 per cent. However, almost 50 per cent disagreed.
The poll learned that just 15.7 per cent believes Thaksin should return to Thailand after the tribunal ruling, 30.3 per cent said his return should be after a general election and almost 40 per cent said he should not come back at all. There was 14.2 per cent that wanted him home immediately.
Around 73 per cent of respondents disagreed with groups holding rallies on judgement day because it would generate confusion, while 26.4 per cent said political parties were entitled to protect their interests.
The poll was conducted between May 22 and 24 among 1,233 respondents.
