Quartet and Buaban maintain their streak

[ATHLETICS] Thailand's awesome foursome and the indefatigable Buaban Pamang made it a hat-trick of gold medals in the women's 4x100m relay and the javelin throw respectively in the Asian Grand Prix, the third and final leg of which concluded in the western Indian city of Pune on Wednesday night.

India underlined their domination in the one-day meet with a scoop of 22 medals, including seven gold and eight silver. A total of 22 gold were up for grabs.

China, who also finished second to India in the second leg in Guwahati on June 23, stayed in second position with six gold. Kazakhstan came third overall with 11 medals including two gold. Thailand, third place overall in Guwahati, finished fourth with two gold, two silver and two bronze.

The promising Thai women's quartet, led by former track queen Supawadee Khaopuek, Sangwan Jaksunil, Orranut Klomdee and Nongnuch Sanrat, had a great start and clocked a record time of 44.00 seconds, eclipsing their previous best of 44.10 established three years ago in Songkhla. China (44.07) and Singapore (47.53) finished second and third.

The victory was the third in a row for the Thai women. They pulled off victories in the first leg in Bangkok on June 19 and the second leg in Guwahati.

Buaban, who took gold in the first two legs, proved again that she is not a one-hit wonder following her surprise win in the women's javelin in Doha. Buaban, the record-holder, who threw 58.44m in the Bangkok leg, however, failed to replicate the performance and had to be content with 54.89m, which was enough to emerge the winner.

Sprint king Watchara Sondee had the tough test of maintaining his reputation against Wen Yongyi, who made a clean sweep of the three legs last year. The speedy Chinese crossed the finish line first in 10.38, while Sitthichai Suwornpratheep and Watchara made it a two-three finish for Thailand with 10.52 and 10.55 respectively.

China beat Thailand in a photo finish in the men's 4x100m relay. Wen anchored the Chinese men's quartet to the gold in 39.78 seconds, The new team of Thaweesak Poolthong, Watchara, Siriroj Darasuriyong and Sutthichai posted an identical time. India finished third in 40.53.

In the women's 100m, Sri Lankan Susanthika Jayasinghe, the 1997 world championship 200m silver medallist, stunned Uzbekistan's Guzel Khubbieva, the Asian Games champion and the winner in the first two legs, with the superb run in 11.35 seconds.

Thailand claimed a bronze when powerful Chatchawal Polyiam, who picked up a silver in the second leg, threw 17.46m in the men's shot put.

Meanwhile, due to the troubles in Beirut, the 17th Asian Athletics Championships has been shifted to Amman and will take place in the last week of July 2007.

Haile sets 2 world marks

n In Ostrava, Czech Republic, Haile Gebrselassie set two world records in the rarely contested one-hour event at the Golden Spike on Wednesday, eclipsing the mark for the time-limited race and adding another at 20,000 metres.

In both events, Gebrselassie broke the 16-year-old records of Mexico's Arturo Barrios set in La Fleche, France. The Ethiopian completed 21,285 metres to beat Barrios' mark by 184 metres, and finished 20,000 metres in 56 minutes, 25.98 seconds, nearly a full 30 seconds faster than the previous standard.
