Thaksin's former lawyer gets jail

A former lawyer of ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra was sentenced yesterday to six months in jail and a fine of Bt7,000 for contempt of court. However, the court opted to put him on probation for two years.

Thana Benchathikul was found guilty by the Criminal Court for criticising the court's jailing of three former Election Commissioners last year. He claimed the court had made its sentence before hearing the evidence. The case relates to criticism of judges who presided in the trial of Vasana Puemlarp, Prinya Nakchudtree and Virachai Naewboonnien. The former EC members were sentenced for unfair practice in relation to the botched April 2 election last year.
