Student killed as truck hits bus

A 14-year-old student was killed and 29 pupils injured when a 10-wheel truck rammed into their school bus in heavy rain in Rayong's Wang Chan district yesterday.

Police rushed to the Beung Takad Market on Ban Beung-Klaeng Road at 7.30am to find the injured students near their bus, which was severely damaged. The truck, which was loaded with fertiliser, was also badly damaged.

Of the students rushed to hospital, three were in critical condition. Piraya Saengyai, a Mathayom 2 student from Rungnapapittaya School, later died. An 11-year-old girl, Boonthipa Yimyeun, remained unconscious.

The school bus driver, Pramuk Sakhonwisawa, 37, said that he had parked the vehicle - with 30 children on board - in front of the market to pick up more students when a speeding truck rammed the bus's rear.

Police are hunting the driver, who fled. They want to him charged with reckless driving.
