WIMBLEDON
DANAI FACES A-ROD HURDLE

Thai hopes to blunt No 3 and his aces

When Danai Udomchoke walks onto the Wimbledon court for his second-round match against world No 3 Andy Roddick today, the only thing that will be on his mind is to take a set off the blazing American.

After cruising past Argentine Carlos Berlocq 6-4 7-5 6-3 in the first round on Monday, a real test awaits the Asian Games gold medallist as his opponent holds the record of the fastest serve on the planet. No one expects the Thai, ranked just No 114 in the world, to take on the mantle of a giant-killer and knock out the world No 3 who is a two-time finalist at the All England Club. Danai himself doesn't believe so. However, giving an easy ride to "A Rod" in their first encounter is not on the Thai's agenda.

"No, no way," Danai said when asked whether he could stun the third seed. "But I look forward to taking a set from him especially the first one."

The former world No 1 and US Open champion will, indubitably, be the biggest name Danai ever had to face across the net. But he said that doesn't affect him or put pressure on him going into the rare meeting.

"Andy is one of the guys people hope would beat Federer here. It should be a good experience for me and I have nothing to lose in that match," said Danai who matched his record at the Grand Slam where he made it to round two in 2005. Without the presence of the injured Paradorn Srichaphan and Tamarine Tanasugarn, who crashed out on Monday, Danai remains the lone Thai hope in the singles competition. He enjoys the company of compatriots who are still alive in the doubles.

"Tammy still has the doubles match and twins [Sonchat and Sanchai Ratiwatana] might get the lucky-loser wildcard for the doubles." Danai had to hang around for two hours for his match due to rain showers on Monday. But he did not let that affect his game as he moved past the 95th-ranked Berlocg in straight sets.

"I really concentrated on my game. He served well but my returns were good, which was the key to the victory."

"The second set point was a key moment," she said after her 7-5 6-2 loss. "If I had made that it would have been a lot different story.

"Sometimes I think about things like that. It's hard but you have to forget about it and just play the next point.

"Shahar was playing very well at the end though and I wasn't playing so good. She started playing very aggressively and serving well. She didn't give me any opportunity to come back."

Tamarine has reached the Wimbledon fourth round on six occasions but a wrist injury, which had forced the Bangkok-based player to miss the WTA tournament in Birmingham and contributed to her failure to qualify for last week's event at Eastbourne, meant she arrived desperately short of grass court practice.

Hamstring hurts Serena

nWhen Serena Williams talked up her chances of winning a third Wimbledon title, she never mentioned anything about an injury.

She didn't count on her father revealing that she's not 100 per cent fit. "I'm going to have to talk to my dad," Williams said. "I'll probably let him slide this time."

Williams reluctantly ackno-wledged that she has been receiving treatment for what she called a "tight" hamstring, which may explain her erratic start to her first round match on Monday at the All England Club.

Williams was down 5-4 in the first set,but won nine straight games to beat Lourdes Dominguez Lino of Spain 7-5, 6-0.
