Cancer drug may be next target

Dabur Pharma, an Indian drug company, can sell a generic drug for cancer patients at a price 20 times lower than the original drug, Public Health Minister Mongkol na Songkhla said yesterday during a working trip to the United Kingdom.
"If we enforce the compulsory licensing on this original drug, Thai patients will enjoy great benefits," Mongkol said. He was inspecting the company's factory in the United Kingdom. The company's headquarters is in India. Dr Vichai Chokevivat, who heads a support committee for compulsory-licensing operations, said Mongkol expressed great interest in the company's generic drug for cancer patients because the price would come down to just Bt200 per patient per day. "If we use the original drug, the price is Bt4,000 a day," he said.
