Subsidy boosted

The government yesterday upped the subsidy it pays hospitals for every patient qualifying for the universal health scheme to Bt2,100, assistant spokesman Natthawat Suthiyothin said

The subsidy covers the 2008 fiscal year and is for the 46.5 million National Health Security Office subscribers. It is currently Bt1,899.

The Cabinet approved the increase that had earlier been given the nod by its second Cabinet-agenda-screening committee chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Paiboon Wattanasiritham.

If the number of eligible patients increased, additional funds would be sought to cover the shortfall, Natthawat said.

Last year the subsidy was Bt1,659 for participating hospitals still collecting the Bt30-a-visit fee.
