Election fraud :EC to pursue criminal action against former TRT executives

The Election Commission yesterday resolved to file a complaints with police to seek criminal action against nine former executives of the dissolved Thai Rak Thai Party related to electoral fraud in the April 2 election last year.

Secretary-general Sutthipol Thaweechaikarn said the complaint would be drafted, signed by the EC chairman, and submitted to the Central Investigation Bureau.

The nine executives include Thamarak Issarangkura and Pongsak Ruktapongpisal.

Perjury case :Monson's Thaksin suit deferred

The Criminal Court yesterday agreed to postpone a hearing on a perjury case brought against ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra by American businessman William Monson due to the possibility of an out-of-court settlement.

The court scheduled October 8 for the hearing to decide whether to launch a judicial review of the case lodged by Monson, of Seattle.

"Through representatives of the defence and the plaintiff, Thaksin has offered to settle out of court but his negotiating terms have yet to be finalised," Monson said after asking for the hearing delay.

In the fallout from a business dispute over a cable television deal in 1989, Monson filed the criminal lawsuit in January, accusing Thaksin of lying on the witness stand in a civil suit for damages.

Protests :Activists use diversionary tactic

The Saturday Voice protesters led by Wiputhaleng Patanaphuthai yesterday bickered with police to create a distraction for activist Suchart Nakbangsai to slip under the security barricade submit a petition to General Prem Tinsulanonda demanding his resignation as Privy Council president.

Prem's aide Vice Admiral Pajun Tampratheep received the petition at the gate of Prem's Sisao Thewes residence.

Wiputhaleng said he would give Prem seven days to quit.

"In the next step, I plan to petition His Majesty the King to fire Prem as I now have nearly 100,000 signatures endorsing the demand," he said.

Anti-coup rally :Leaders could be prosecuted

The Council for National Security (CNS) yesterday claimed to have obtained incriminating evidence to prosecute organisers of Saturday's anti-coup rally.

"Based on confirmation by acting national police chief General Seripisut Temiyavej, police have taken pictures of money changing hands between organisers and protesters," CNS spokesman Colonel Sansern Kaewkamnoed said.

Protesters were paid Bt1,000 per head to join the rally at Sanam Luang and the payment rose to Bt1,500 if they marched to Army headquarters, Sansern said.

Pollution :Rayong factories to be checked

The Industrial Works Department and the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand will investigate five petrochemical refineries and a power plant in Rayong for exceeding emission limits.
