Cash for strife-torn region

The Bt3.7 billion for organising the next election plus Bt7.5 billion for the deep South will be included in the fiscal 2008 budget, Deputy Prime Minister and Industry Minister Kosit Panpiemras said.
He told a seminar yesterday the 2008 budget would go before the National Legislative Assembly in early June. The appropriations bill is in line with forecast economic growth of 5 per cent, he said. To achieve that growth, the government will run a budget deficit of Bt165 billion - or 1.8 per cent of gross domestic product. Finance Minister Chalongphob Sussangkarn told the same seminar total 2007 revenue collections could be Bt30 billion lower than target, due mainly to lower corporate-tax income.
