Khattiya hit with contempt claims

The Criminal Court yesterday heard allegations senior Army officer Maj-General Khattiya Sawasdipol committed contempt of court by denouncing a four-month jail sentence for a criminal-defamation conviction.

The court was told the officer complained of being wrongly convicted and sentenced for criminal defamation committed against current national police chief Seripisut Temiyavej.

The court last week found Khattiya guilty of defaming Seripisut, then an inspector-general, for comments about his crackdown on gambling dens. He was given four months' jail.

Counsel for Seripisut, Anantachai Chaiyadej, said Khattiya posted the allegedly contemptuous material on his personal website.

Court Chief Justice Jirawan Suwanwanichkul was asked to withdraw Khattiya's Bt50,000 bail pending appeal against conviction and sentence.

Khattiya faces an additional 28 counts of defamation brought by Seripisut in criminal courts..

He has 30 days to appeal the first verdict and sentence.

Anantachai produced material from the allegedly offending website purporting to be posted by Khattiya. It questions the court's consistency in acquitting or convicting defendants.

Anantachai alleged Khattiya "shows no respect for others and repeatedly defames them, resulting in numerous lawsuits that burden the judicial system".

He said Khattiya attempted to assault Seripisut in a court session, prompting the judge to issue a contempt warning.

Outside the court, Khattiya said website material referred to was posted by another and had been removed. He would explain to the court how this could happen. He agreed to appear at further hearings in civilian clothes.
