Thailand excel in Guwahati

[ATHLETICS] Thai athletes set the Indira Gandhi Stadium alight on Saturday night with their superb performances, winning seven medals, including four gold, in the Asian Grand Prix second leg at Guwahati in India's northeastern Assam state.

The Thai men's and women's quartets swept the gold in the 4x100m relays, while Watchara Sondee won the men's double sprint gold and Buaban Pamang topped the women's javelin throw.

Watchara, a bronze medallist at last year's Asian Games in Doha and a silver medal winner at the first leg, shattered Chinese Wen Yongyi's hopes of making it two in a row. Wen won the gold in the Bangkok leg last Tuesday.

Watchara clocked the fastest and season-best time of 10.34 seconds to win his first gold in the Guwahati leg, while Wen was second, .02 seconds behind, and Sitthichai Suwornpratheep finished third (10.45).

Watchara, later anchored the Thai men's relay team, which included Sitthichai, Seksan Wongsala and Panom Pudsa, to the 4x100m gold in 39.85 seconds. India and Singapore were second and third respectively. First-leg champions China did not finish the race.

The Thai women's foursome of Sangwan Jaksunin, Orranut Klomdee, Juthamas Thaworncharoen and Suwapadee Khaopuek repeated their Bangkok feat, winning the 4x100m relay in 44.43 seconds. They had also won the gold in the Bangkok leg. China (44.53) and India (47.33) came

second and third respectively.

Fresh from winning the women's javelin at the Bangkok leg, Buaban, a gold medallist in Doha, threw a gold-medal effort of 56.23 metres on Saturday.

Thai strongman Chatchawal Polyiem, who had to be content with the shot put bronze on home soil last week, threw 17.95m to claim the silver. The other bronze came from the men's quartet, who finished third in the 4x400m relay.

India took the overall crown with 19 medals (five gold, eight silver and six bronze) in the Guwahati leg. China, the Bangkok-leg champions were second (5-4-2) and. Thailand finished third (4-1-2).

The third and final leg will take place in the western Indian city of Pune on June 27.
