HK top Asian online city

Hong Kong edged past Singapore, Taipei, Singapore and Seoul for Internet connectivity in the inaugural survey of 28 Asian cities. Manila, meanwhile, was ranked 19th in the survey, interestingly ahead of Indian cities Bangalore and New Delhi.

The survey is the first of its kind in the region and aims to highlight that in many cases, cities, rather than countries, are competing against each other and that better broadband infrastructure can be critical to economic success.

Hong Kong was given credit for healthy competition in its broadband market and sustainable liberalisation policies. One of the distinguishing features of the Hong Kong broadband landscape is not only the competition among access providers, but the range of competing technologies that are available to consumers.

Ranking in broadband Internet connection were: Hong Kong, Singapore, Taipei, Tokyo, Seoul, (tied) Osaka, Busan, Melbourne, Sydney, Auckland, Kuala Lumpur, Macau, Penang, (tied) Bangkok, Beijing, Shenzhen, (tied) Shanghai, Guangzhou, Manila, (tied) Brunei, Bangalore, (tied) Delhi, Mumbai, Jakarta, Saigon, Hanoi, Phnom Penh and Vientiane respectively.
