Judge denies bribe tip-off

Supreme Court president Panya Thanomrod has denied an allegation he refused a bribe designed to influence the electoral fraud verdict against the Thai Rak Thai Party after a judge alerted him to the issue.

"Panya has never received any tip-off about the attempted kickbacks and subsequent checks have confirmed his statement," Judiciary Commission deputy secretary-general Sara-wut Benjathikul said yesterday.

Sarawut said Panya had informed the commission about the bribery scandal and his reaction to it. He said no Constitution Tribunal judges wrote to alert Panya about the "kickbacks" last November, as alleged by activist Veera Somkwamkid.

He said the commission was ready to look into the matter if anyone stepped forward to file a complaint. - The Nation
