Disputed council bill will not be scrapped

The Social Development and Human Security Ministry aims to push ahead with its Local Community Organisation Council Bill despite the dismal reception from other ministries and local administrative bodies.

Deputy Minister Poldej Pinpratheep said yesterday that the Council of State was now reviewing the draft as part of the process for proposing a bill to the legislature and the government's legal advisory arm was expected to sign off on it in few weeks.

He said that using a ministerial regulation to establish the councils, as suggested by Interior Minister Aree Wongsearaya, was an alternative but the councils should be run systematically and supported by fiscal regulations, and that would be best served by an act governing them.

Poldej reiterated that he had no intention of stepping down to show responsibility, even if the bill was downgraded to a ministerial regulation.

Aree and tambon and provincial administration organisations have jointly criticised the bill.
