Honda will back Ratthapark, says Sakuri

[MOTORCYCLING] AP Honda company has a long-term plan to back Thai rider Ratthapark Wilairot in the Motor GP, its president Zenjiro Sakuri said.
The 19-year-old Ratthapark, the first Thai rider contesting in the Motor GP for the entire campaign, has produced reasonable performances so far in his debut season, lying in 16th place in the 250cc's overall standings, with 16 points from seven races. Although Ratthapark was unable to garner points in the last two races, including on the Catalunya Circuit where Sakuri was present to lend his support to the Thai, he believes the youngster has the right ingredients to become a top rider. He said he was ready to support Ratthapark to make his name on the world stage. "We'll continue to support him. We didn't and aren't expecting him to finish in a high position in his first season. He is still in the learning process, getting used to the circuits and competition in each race. I think next year, things would be in place and in the next two or three years he could mount a serious challenge," said Sakuri. "In the past seven races, he has managed to complete the race and earn points in five of them. That's something outstanding." Sakuri said his company also has plans to push other Thai riders onto the international stage like Ratthapark. "Ratthapark isn't the only Thai rider we have backed. Recently, we also provided support to Ratthapark's younger brother, Ratthapong, who contests in Japan's National Championships. "Next year, we have plans to support other Thai youngsters who are competent enough to compete in Spain's circuit, which we regard as a perfect finishing school before their advent into the Motor GP," said Sakuri. Sakuri said he would try to find another Thai sponsor besides the existing ones - AP Honda, Thai Airways and PTT Plc - to support Ratthapark. Meanwhile, Kanokphan Julkasem, the Sports Authority of Thailand governor, said he has plans to use Ratthapark, nicknamed Film, as a role model to generate interest in the sport among the youth.
