Schools set to reopen

Schools in Narathiwat are expected to reopen today after having been shut for several days following the slaying of four teachers last week, according to a senior Education Ministry official.

Basic Education Commis-sion secretary-general Khunying Kasama Varavarn na Ayudhaya said schools closed last week in Rusoh, Si Sakhon and Rangae would reopen today.

A meeting with the provincial governor will take place this afternoon to discuss security measures for teachers, Kasama added. Her office was providing money to rebuild schools torched by suspected militant arsonists.

Temporary classrooms are being provided by residents for pupils of damaged schools and for those in "high-risk areas", she said.
