NLA to consider bill to prevent conflicts of interest

The National Legislative Assembly is to consider a draft bill aimed at preventing conflicts of interest by public office holders in a session on Wednesday.
The legislation was proposed by PM's Office Minister Thirapat Serirangsan and is based on his extensive research into ethics, conflicts of interest and corruption among Thai politicians.According to the bill, politicians or state officials, as well as their spouses, relatives and dependants, will be barred from taking part in any bidding for state schemes, using insider information or using state property for private or personal benefit, and many other practices. Proposed punishment ranges from two to 15 years in jail. NLA member Wallop Tangkhananurak said yesterday he believed the assembly would approve the draft in principle and then set up a panel to review it. The Nation
