International legal fight?

A Democrat Party executive warned the government yesterday to be wary of attempts by former premier Thaksin Shinawatra to try to turn his case into an international legal issue.
Korbsak Sabhavasu said that Baker Botts LLP, the US law firm Thaksin formerly hired as a lobbyist, had transferred his case to its International Dispute Resolution Section - to try to solve Thaksin's problems. "I want to note the company is considering international laws to defend Thaksin," the Democrat said. "He might want to live in exile permanently. If he can do that, he will not have to report to a court and doesn't have to come back. And the cases that the Assets Examination Committee are investigating will not be able to proceed. "What Thaksin is doing might be the opposite to what people fear - his return," Korbsak said. Baker Botts is an international law firm based in Texas, in the United States. It published a statement on Wednesday that attacked the freezing of bank accounts belonging to Thaksin, his wife and key family members. But the statement incorrectly referred to the AEC move as a "seizure of assets". A copy of the statement by Michael Goldberg, chairman of Baker Botts' International Dispute Resolution Section, was obtained by The Nation. The statement stated that Thaksin was their client.
