Bomb at soccer injures five

A blast at a community football stadium in Pattani's Yaring district during a match wounded five police officers assigned to provide security to spectators.
The bomb was placed inside a flowerpot near where a group of police officers were observing the crowd and the match. The bomb is believed to have been set off remotely by mobile phone. In Narathiwat's Rangae district, a home-made bomb went off after it was accidentally dropped by the man who was transporting it on his motorbike, killing him instantly. Police identified the man as Sathopa Sirom and are investigating to see if or how he is connected to the ongoing insurgency. In Rusoh district, a gunman shot dead Daloh Arderleh, 46, and injured his wife, Aziza Yunu, 54, who was found weeping over her husband's body when the authorities arrived at the scene. In Tamob Pasemat in Sungai Kolok district, a home-made bomb placed near a parked military GMC transport truck exploded, injuring one soldier. The series of attacks came just hours after security apparatus in the restive region went into a tailspin as insurgents set fire to 13 schools the night before. The attacks prompted 60 more schools to close their doors, joining about 150 others in halting classes because of the violence. More than 2,200 people have been killed and thousands wounded in the deep South since January 2004. A total of 215 public schools have come under arson attack since the violence began. Teachers and schools are often targeted by insurgents, who see them as trying to impose Buddhist Thai values on the Muslim and ethnic Malay majority in the region. The violence has escalated despite peace-building measures by the military-installed government, which came to power following the coup in September last year. The Nation Pattani
